2007 AFC South Preview Print E-mail

{mosimage}The Colts are the top dogs in the AFC South while the Titans are a team on the rise. The Jaguars and the Texans are just trying to find a way to win games on a consistent basis. The AFC South is made up of only one dominant team while the rest of the division can’t seem to get out of their own way. In 2006, we saw the Indianapolis Colts finally get over the hump called the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship to beat the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI. The Jaguars and Texans fell flat on their faces while the Titans showed plenty of promise with a new NFL superstar.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts silenced all the critics who said that they were not tough enough to win it all. In 2006, Indianapolis won the close games, defensive battles, as well as high scoring affairs. They definitely proved that there’s much more to their spectacular passing game that has made Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison NFL icons. The rest of the league will be gunning for the Colts in 2007 and the question will be whether or not this team can repeat as Super Bowl Champs. Their road to another title will not be so easy because of some of the key losses to this team that include Mike Doss, Cato June, Dominic Rhodes, and Nick Harper. The Defense will have to plug in quality reserves willing to step up and make an impact for this team. On offense, the unit is pretty much intact with Manning at the helm. Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison form a very dangerous receiver combo while second year tailback Joseph looks forward to his opportunity as the feature back.

Prediction: The Colts do not have much competition in the AFC South. A repeat as the division champs is very likely this season. Indianapolis will get deep into the playoffs once again with 12 or 13 regular season wins.

Tennessee Titans

With Vince Young under the center, the Titans are destined to great things in the future. This young QB seems to have every asset needed to succeed and he will make everyone around him better. However, the Titans do have some holes that will need to be corrected before the start of the regular season. Travis Henry bolted for Denver while Adam “Pacman” Jones got himself suspended for the season. The defensive line will have to step it up and create a serious pass rush while the secondary will need to compensate for the loss of their best cornerback, Pacman.

Prediction: The Titans are the team of the future with a good chance of being a contender this season. I see the defense stepping up and helping Vince Young and the offense out tremendously, getting them in the playoffs for the first time since 2003.

Jacksonville Jaguars

It’s so hard to get a read on what the Jaguars will do every season. Jacksonville has a reputation of starting off very strong, only to fizzle out by the end of the season. They still have a stout defense that can get to the ball and make plays and their arsenal on offense is very impressive. Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew are a dynamic duo that should put up similar numbers in 2006 this season. The Jaguars biggest weakness comes at the quarterback and wide receiver position. Byron Leftwich and head coach Jack Del-Rio are yet to be on the same page while receivers Reggie Williams and Matt Jones have not lived up to the team’s expectations.

Prediction: Until the Jaguars can get consistent play from Leftwich and the receivers, this team will continue to struggle. Jacksonville will hold the third spot in the AFC South division with no more than eight wins this season.

Houston Texans

The off-season moves that Houston has made will definitely benefit this team down the road. Matt Schaub will be the new signal caller now that David Carr got the boot. Running back Ahman Green has a history of injury problems but the Texans still believe that he can produce at a high level. Andre Johnson is top ten receiver in my opinion and will be gunning for another trip to the pro bowl this season. On defense, the most watched player will be Mario Williams who did not live up to the fans’ expectations last season after being drafted number one overall in the 2006 NFL Draft. The Texans will need to come together as a team and start making game-changing plays if they want to compete in the tough AFC Conference.

Prediction: With a fairly inexperienced Matt Schaub under center, the deck will be stacked against the Texans this season. Houston will dwell at the bottom of the AFC South for another year.

I agree with your evaluation of the Titans and Vince Young and would not be at all surprised if he wins his first playoff game this season.

Vince Young is the man and should have been the 1st pick of the draft, not 3rd.

Plus, his confidence is contagious.

The Texans are hopeless and chose, basically, to play against Vince Young for the next however many years.

I was not aware the Colts lost so much on D. That is going to hurt. Divisional title, yes. Super Bowl appearance won't be a given (as if it ever is).
