7/31/07 Tight End Nic Dilillo has committed to Ohio State and the Buckeye recruiting chart has been updated. 7/17/07 A quick update. Just got home from Columbus. Always great to see your people, and where people wearing scarlet and gray are the norm. Hearing the grandkid give you a "Go Bucks" and an "O H" works also. On Monday Safety prospect Dan McCarthy pulled the trigger for Notre Dame. He was Notre Dame's recruit to lose and they did not lose him. I guess we are now supposed to say "good luck Dan", but really....So, with McCarthy in the rear view mirror, where are we at this time with our verbal commits? We are holding with nine verbal commitments. Six of our verbal commitments are offensive players. In no particular order, we have Mike Adams, offensive lineman, from Columbus. Adams is a Scout.com 4 star recruit, ranked as the 2nd best offensive tackle recruit in the country. J.B. Shugarts, from Texas, is also projected as an offensive tackle, a five star recruit and the 6th best tackle recruit, says Scout.com. Completing the Oline at this time is Orlando native Michael Brewster, the #1 rated center prospect in the country and a 5 star prospect. At taiback, DeVoe Torrence has issued his verbal commitment. DeVoe, is rated as the 4th best tailback recruit and a 4 star player. Interesting with DeVoe is the idea that Coach Tressel apparently told him he would be our only tailback recruit if he commited. Other tailbacks have expressed an interest, including Sam McGuffey, but none have received an offer. Also interesting is the idea that Torrence may be a better linebacker that tailback. Coach likes to recruit players who can be used in multiple ways. Receiving wise the Buckeyes have a verbals from DeVier Posey and Jacob Stoneburner. Posey is a 4 star and ranked as the 9th best receiver recruit. Stoneburner is listed by Scout.com as a tight end with 4 stars and as the 4th best tightend recruit nationally. We shall see how his future develops as he expects to get his shot out wide or in the slot. Special team wise the Bucks received their first verbal from Ben Buchanan, a highly touted place kicker. Defensively, the Buckeyes have 2 verbals. Andrew Sweat from PA, per Scout a middle backer, the 5th rated middle backer and a 4 star recruit. Nathan Williams has also commited verbally. Williams talks of being recruited to play as an outside backer. Scout lists him as a defensive end, 4 stars, and the 27th best D end prospect. This is where we stand at the moment. Recruiting is a gratification sport. We are tickled to be where we are, but need some of these boys out there to pull the trigger for the Bucks.
7-13-07 A quick up update where we stand with our recruiting. Scout.com presently ranks us at number 9 in the country and number 1 in the Big Ten. Scout.Com assigns numerical star ranking to the verbally committed players, 5 stars being the best, 0 stars being at the bottom end. The Bucks lead the nation from a quality star rating with an average rating of 4.11 per recruit. Editorial comment in that of course in the long run the number of stars applied to a particular player means nothing, but unless you see all the players, which I haven't and will not, this ranking is about as good as it gets. We now have 9 verbal commits. Next on the hit parade is Dan McCarthy, a safety prospect from Youngstown. Being from Youngstown you would guess he will verbal to the good guys, but, in this case, Notre Dame is the team to beat and has to be considered the favorite. This is a legacy deal. Brother plays for the Irish now, with family ties that go deeper. This recruit was considered to be a Notre Dame lock as recently as a couple of weeks ago. Now, it seems to be anybodies guess. The McCarthy's haven't tipped their hand publicly. An announcement is scheduled for Monday. To me it is obvious that Coach Tressel has done a great job of making this a tough decision for Dan McCarthy. Truth is this player will not make or break either OSU or Notre Dame's recruiting classes, but it appears that Dan McCarthy is the type of quality player you want playing for you and not for someone else. Sout.Com has Dan as their 9th best safety recruit and a 4 star player. Go Bucks!
No football or Bball to dissect, so let's talk cruises. In February
there is going to be a Buckeye cruise- 4 days, 3 nights to the
Bahammas. How cool will it be to see Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the
Sea flying our scarlet and gray colors. The Buckeye cruise has the
purpose of raising money and awareness for the Stefanie Spielman Fund
for Breast cancer Research at OSU's James Cancer Hospital. I guess what goes around comes around is true from a Buckeye standpoint. It appears, provided the Trustees concur, that E. Gordan Gee will again be our President. I won't miss the outgoing President, and if I remember correctly Gee was a friend to OSU athletics. If so, welcome back President Gee. Can we tailgate and knock down a few pre game?
