NFL 2007 NFC North Preview

Detroit Lions

The Lions made the biggest headline in the 2007 NFL Draft when they snagged college standout Calvin Johnson with their 2nd overall pick. Even though the lions were burned when they drafted Charles Rogers in 2003 and Mike Williams in 2004, grabbing Johnson was the only logical move for them to make. Now Jon Kitna has two explosive weapons in the passing game (Calvin Johnson and Roy Williams) that has the potential to be the best wide receiver tandem in the NFL. Coach Rob Marinelli is trying to change the mindset of the defensive unit by getting rid of players and coaches that he felt did not help the team. Marinelli’s hopes are that he can instill a ferocious attitude into all of his defensive players.

Prediction: General Manager Matt Millen will still see “Fire Millen” signs all season. This team is a few more players away from being competitive but are not quite their yet. Marinelli has the Lions on the right track and we will all see improvement from this team in 2007. Detroit has lost more than 10 games the past six seasons. I am going to go out on a limb and say that the streak ends this season.

Minnesota Vikings

It’s a rebuilding process in Minnesota where young and unproven Tarvaris Jackson will be the starting quarterback. The rest of the Vikings squad will consist of new faces that head coach Brad Childress hope will make an impact in the future. Their biggest weapon may be rookie running back Adrian Peterson made a name for himself at Oklahoma.

Prediction: Don’t expect to see any results different than that of the 2006 season. With Tarvaris Jackson under the center, the Vikings will go thru some growing pains and be at the bottom of the NFC North division this season.
