The recruiting season is always hectic at the end, but the end of the 2007 season saw an unexpected big-time committment to the Wolverines.
For weeks, Michigan coaches pursued in-state star Ronald Johnson, one of the country's elite cornerback/wide receiver prospects. To many observers, Johnson appeared to be a lock for UM.
But behind the scenes, USC's Pete Carroll was wining and dining the star from Muskegon, MI, and a disagreement between Johnson and his mother about where he was going to play also was rumored to have taken place. Meanwhile, a similar situation was playing out in California, where Long Beach star CB Donovan Warren was supposed to be a USC lock, even as Michigan coaches moved in on him. Michigan also had a family member in their corner, as Warren's dad came out in support of UM, mentioning their ability to churn out quality NFL corners like Ty Law and Charles Woodson. By the time signing day rolled around, the two stars had pulled a switch-a-roo and gone to opposite ends of the country to play their college ball. In the end, it may turn out well for Michigan despite how upset their fans were that they lost the in-state star. Warren may not be the receiver that Johnson is but he is more of a pure corner with better technique, and he has the ideal height (6'1 and 176 pounds) to be able to go up against the bigger receivers in the Big Ten like Arrelious Benn of Illinois and James Hardy of Indiana. He will need to put on some weight and improve his tackling ability, but Warren has the smooth hips, great instincts, speed, and attitude necessary to be a star CB on the college level. He just might see plenty of the field next year due to Michigan's lack of proven commodities at the CB position and the struggles of Morgan Trent and Johnny Sears last year, who are projected to start. At the very least, expect to see Warren in a nickel back role from time to time to match up against teams like Purdue that love to spread the field. Warren could team with 2008 commit Boubacar Cissoko of Detroit Cass Tech to form one of the Wolverines' top CB duos in recent memory and help solidify their defense for the next 3-4 years.
