The two-sport star and brother of current Wolverine RB Kevin Grady should be a big help to John Beilein's rebuilding effort with his speed and quickness. He might also play football.
It's not yet set in stone if Grady will play only basketball or if he will dabble in football, but one thing's for sure: he brings incredible quickness to whatever game he plays.
Grady is ranked a 3-star prospect in both sports by most people, but he could be a very good role player and a sleeper recruit for the basketball team especially. Detroit Pistons GM Joe Dumars saw him play in the Michigan state playoffs and said he was one of the most intriguing prospects he saw while scouting around the talent-rich state in basketball. Grady also badly outplayed Ohio State commit and junior guard Anthony "Noopy" Crater in the playoffs, and Crater was considered a 5-star prospect at the time (he has since dropped to a 4-star by most services), so you know Grady has the skills to do well against big-time opponents. Grady will help out most in the areas of defense and ball-handling for the Wolverines next year as the only returning point guard is Jerrett Smith, who is a bit too slow and erratic to be a full-time Big Ten starter at the position. Don't be surprised if Grady wins the starting job as a freshman next year, depending on how well he picks up Beilein's run-and-gun, Princeton-on-steroids offense. He should be a good fit as he is a solid three-point shooter who likes to push the ball in transition. He is a bit short at about 5-10/5-11, somewhere in that area, but he is also fairly strong due to his football background and quick enough to make up for his lack of height. As for football, I saw Grady in the state title game win his team had over Farmington Hills Harrison and he was the quickest player on the field who hit the holes hard and showed good agility. He could be a nice change-of-pace running back or kick returner if he does indeed give football a shot later on. Related Articles:

Why do you have to bring Noopy into this? Grady definitely is quick and seems to play with eyes in back of his head. If he plans on starting in the Big Ten at PG as a freshman, he'll need that. That is a tough task and we'll probably see the "real" Kelvin Grady in year 2. Mike Conley and Isiah Thomas are a couple notable exceptions. To me, he looks like a hell of a talent who should dedicate himself to basketball only. In high school, the guys who played football (especially for schools that went deep into playoffs) come in with a big disadvantage as far as fluidity of skills are concerned. Some teams are practically just getting in a groove when the basketball tourney starts. Did you see the game against Noopy Carter? |

Nah, I didnt see all of it although I saw some highlights and read about it. Not to disparage Noopy who will be a great player but Grady's performance kinda validated his status in the eyes of a few angry MSU fans on the Michigan board and also some UM fans who had doubts about him, that's all. Plus Grady had more experience when they played. |
