Great new came down on July 5, 2007 from the Nebraska Football Hall of fame; six former Huskers were picked for induction into the 2007 Nebraska Football Hall of Fame. The 2007 class will be inducted Sept. 21 and honored prior to the NU-Ball State game Sept. 22 at Memorial Stadium. Erik Wiegert, brother of 12 year NFL veteran Zack Wiegert headlines this year’s class along with Jason Peter, Dante Jones and Tyrone Leggett.

Ex-Huskers Eric Anderson, Jason Peter and Kevin Ramaekers also were selected by the Nebraska chapter of the National Football Foundation. Eric Wiegert, who is from my old home town and school Fremont Bergan, graduated from Nebraska in 1992 and by all accounts, could have easily played in the NFL, but a inoperable bruised spine, which could cause Eric’s arms to go numb when hit on his head a certain way prevented this dream. According to Eric "I saw a lot of guys from Miami and Florida State and Colorado that I played against, and knew I could block, go on to play a lot of time in the NFL," Erik Wiegert said. "I like to think I could have done it."

Between the 1989 and 1991 seasons, Erik Wiegert played 31 games helping the Huskers lead the nation in rushing as a senior (353.2 yards per game). Eric’s versatility allowed him to play two different positions on the offensive line that season, starting 3 games at left tackle, and then moving to left guard. In 1991 he was both a Husker captain and All-Big Eight performer.

Jason Peter had the thrill of playing along side his brother Christen Peter and was twice voted All-Big 12. He was also an Outland Trophy finalist, a Bronco Nagurski Award finalist and was voted to the Huskers' All-Century team. Jason also played on national title teams in 1994, '95 and '97, and was part of a Blackshirts squad that led the nation in total defense in '94 and '96. He was a captain of the '97 team, and then was drafted in the first round by Carolina, where he played four seasons.

Dante Jones was also a member of the 1994 Husker team that went 13-0 and won the National Championship. After earning glory with the Blackshirts, Dante went on to a NFL career that included playing in the 1997 Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Tyrone Leggett was a third-round NFL draft pick, after lettering 3 straight years at Nebraska. He played five years with New Orleans and a season each with Tampa Bay and San Francisco, the longest pro career of any 2007 class inductee.
