7-13-07 The freshman QB is tabbed as UM's next great signal-caller. If you had to pick one word to describe Michigan freshman QB Ryan Mallett, it would have to be "big." {youtube}V05pWnzQAB4{/youtube} Mr. Mallett has a big frame (6-foot-6), big hype surrounding his ability, big expectations for him to become the next great QB at Michigan, and above all else, a big, big arm. In fact, it just might be the strongest arm of any QB in college football right now, and might even be stronger than departed LSU #1 pick JaMarcus Russell's by the time he leaves campus. Mallett was rated a 5-star prospect by just about every recruiting service and in most cases the number QB in the country behind Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen. But many feel that Mallett could be the better player by the time his college career's over. For all the noise about Charlie Weis' ability to develop quaterbacks, don't forget that Michigan has been an NFL QB factory over the years. Mallett needs to work a bit on his accuracy but he is deceptively quick in the pocket for a guy his size, reminiscent of former Iowa QB Nathan Chandler in my opinion, and also has a great innate ability to sell the play-action pass with ball fakes, something that could pay huge dividends with the type of offense Michigan runs. Mallett has a lot of lofty expectations to live up to, but with his talent, the sky is truly the limit. Related Articles:
