Breaking Down the Big NBA Draft Night Trades Print E-mail

The 2007 NBA Draft saw several big names moved by the time the night was over. But who got the better end of each deal? Read on to find out.

It was a wild night in the NBA as several teams in the usually passive league made huge moves to shake the foundations of their teams.

Let's break down the biggest moves of the night and which teams improved themselves in these deals:

Golden State trades Jason Richardson and the #36 pick (Alabama F Jamareo Davidson) to Charlotte for #8 pick Brandan Wright:

Michael Jordan told ESPN's Rachel Nichols he was tired of waiting around and wanted to make a run at winning now, and he wasn't kidding. Some analysts thought Charlotte got the worst of the deal due to Richardson's 4-year, 48-million dollar contract that's still on the books but the Bobcats aren't paying many players big money now and are still way under the cap so they should be able to handle it.

This trade should help out both teams since Golden State needs inside scoring badly and a young player with the chance to help take them to the next level in the tough West while Charlotte needed a veteran and a go-to guy who can mentor the young players already in place.

Portland trades Zach Randolph, Dan Dickau, and Fred Jones to New York for Channing Frye and Steve Francis:

Another trade that helps out both teams, with New York getting a slight advantage in terms of overall talent. Portland needed to get rid of Randolph's contract and to give LaMarcus Aldridge more playing time and room to grow while New York needed yet another shake-up.

Randolph and Eddie Curry will be yet another high-stakes sociology experiment in the Big Apple engineered by Isiah Thomas that will be worth keeping an eye on. Randolph and Curry will be an unbelievable low-post tandem that most East teams won't be able to handle, but both are a bit sluggish on defense at times. It was worth a shot for the going-nowhere Knicks in the end, however.

The only question on Portland's end is whether or not they could have gotten more for Randolph. Francis' best years are behind him and Frye is a bit too soft for a big man with his talent.

Seattle trades Ray Allen and the #35 pick (LSU F Glen Davis) to Boston for Delonte West, Wally Szczerbiak, and the #5 pick (Jeff Green)-

The Celtics could have taken a flier on Yi Jianlian at this spot and it might have been a good idea for the future, but Boston is so stacked with young guys right now that it would have just continued an already glacier-slow rebuilding process. Allen is a veteran presence they sorely need.

The main question is how high up the East ladder the Allen acquisition takes Boston. Al Jefferson might not be enough to hold down the fort on the inside to give the Celtics a chance to contend in the East right now so you kind of wonder where Boston is ultimately headed.

Seattle got a good team guy to do the little things and play defense in support of Kevin Durant in Jeff Green. Green will be a good fit and the pick was worth giving up Allen for, but the Sonics might have been better off taking a gamble on a guy like Jianlian here themselves since the West is so stacked and it will take a little luck to pass up the likes of San Antonio, Phoenix and Dallas any time soon. Green doesn't have the high ceiling that guys like Jianlian and Brandan Wright do.

Overall, give Seattle a slight edge in this trade. Boston got better by adding Allen but considering they're not going to win a title anytime soon, they would have been better off drafting another young guy in order to have a chance to compete for one down the road.
