Page 2 of 2 As the playoffs unfolded, the most stunning upset in NBA history was about to occur. Nelson, who had came to Golden State 3 years earlier, got into the head of Avery Johnson and completely un-nerved the reigning Western Conference Champions in 6 games and the series wasn’t even that close. Utah and Houston hooked up in a thrilling 7 game series, with the Jazz bucking the odd and defeating the Rockets in Houston in game 7. The Spurs defeated the Nuggets like they were “chicken nuggets” in 5 games as did the Suns over the Lakers. This set up a classic “opposite style of series with the Suns and Spurs. However much to everyone’s surprise 5 of the 6 games in the series had at least one team scoring more than 100 points and a very controversial call regarding suspensions in game 5 swung the series to San Antonio. Utah continued it’s outstanding play and destroyed the Warriors in 5 games, setting up a very exciting, TV network dream match-up in the Western Conference finals of San Antonio Spurs and Utah Jazz. In the Eastern Conference the Washington Wizards were decimated by the loss of both Caron Butler and Gilbert Arenas to season ending injuries limped into the playoffs as did the Orlando Magic. The defending champions Miami Heat with Dwayne Wade nursing a dislocated shoulder gained the 4th seed and a match-up against the very dangerous Chicago Bulls. Three of the 4 first round Eastern Conference match-up were sweeps, with the Bulls pulling off the most stunning of all, but becoming the first team to sweep the defending champions in the first round. Cleveland swept the depleted Wizards and the Detroit Pistons swept Orlando. The only series that was interesting, if you can call it that was the New Jersey Nets versus the Toronto Raptors, who were the 3rd seed, and in a minor upset, the Nets defeated the Raptors in 6 games. The second round saw both series go in 6 games with Cleveland defeating New Jersey and Detroit advancing against the Chicago. Cleveland led by Lebron and a surprising 2nd round draft pick, rookie Daniel Gibson from the University of Texas, took out Detroit in 6 games.
