Page 1 of 3 My friend once followed him into a bathroom for his autograph and it did not seem too unreasonable. After all, this was Greg Simpson. The guy who ran an offense that did not run any plays, literally. Watch Greg drive. Watch Greg shoot. Get the hell out of his way. Then go get ready to rebound. 15 years ago Greg Simpson (6-1 PG) lead his team, Lima Senior, to the state finals. In the Semi's he hit a 30 footer to send them there. His autographed McDonald's high school basketball card easily sold for $50 at card shows. His trademark dunk consisted of tossing the ball under one arm, catching it and finishing with passion. He was a force all through high school. His senior year, Simpson averaged 35.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 3.1 steals per game. This included shooting 52.9% from the field and 51% from 3 pt. land. If forced to compare him to someone in the NBA it would be Allen Iverson, no doubt. He was the Ohio High School player of the year. A McDonald's All-American. Big Ten freshman of the year at Ohio State. Now, I can't find him on YouTube. I can't find him on Google web or Google images. It's hard to find any type of story except a New York Times Archive from 1994 . He's nothing. He's lost. He's a statistic. He was the best high school player I've ever seen.
My father, brother, family friend and I followed him through his high school tournament run, up to the state tournament semi's. We saw probably half of his final 10 games, where he averaged 41 points and shot nearly 60% from the field. Kind of like Mike Tyson in his prime, we had all come to conclusion that we probably won't see anyone as good as him, definitely not as exciting. Local television shows ran stories how Simpson was not only a great player, but a good role model as well. Not a hint of criminal intent, anger or trouble was ever relayed to the general public.
